Has anybody tried St. Johns Wort extract to treat their depression?
I’m taking 2 X 150 mg capsules (Natures Made) of St. Johns Wort extract (standardized to 0.3% hyperecin), three times a day to treat a lifelong problem with moderate depression. I’ve spent years taking SSRI antipressants and counselling, so now I want to give this herb a try. I’m also taking Passionflower whole herb capsules for anxiety.
So far, after a month on St. Johns Wort, I do seem to be feeling more calm during the day, but no relief from my insomnia yet. But, NO side effects, unlike what I got from Prozac, Paxil, and Desyryl. Passionflower has been great for relieving early morning anxiety.
I also am a member and activist for NAMI, which I feel has been a great help to me in making new friends and helping lobby for mental health issues.
If you have been or are taking St. Johns Wort extract for depression, I would appreciate your comments.
I have not personally taken it, however my older sister has taken it for the past six months and I have seen quite a big change in her. She seems to be calmer, happier, and just her old self again. I hope it stays that way.
Best of luck to you!

I’ve tried it a couple of years ago. It didn’t have any effect at the time (though I doubt i’d have noticed). I’d only been on it a couple of weeks though, how long did it take to start to make you feel calmer? It sounds as if it’s worth another go.

Tried it. Worked a little, but effects weren’t substantial enough over the long-term to leave me waiting for a drug to cure my depression.
I had to get myself out of it. It wasn’t until I took more active steps physically that I was able to beat the depression that was slowly tearing me apart. I got in shape and lost the extra weight the antidepressants put on. I got out of the social rut and found a girlfriend. I got on with life - on my own.

I only heard that it treats anxiety. If it does work, let me know.
Good luck if you do decide to try it.
