What are the best natural treatments for depression?
I’ve battled depression for 7 years and after being put on Trazadone and Welbutrin when I was 15 I hated the effect they had on me and stopped taking them. And dealing with depression on my own isn’t helping either so I want to try a more natural approach. Anyone know of what’s best to take? I know I’ve heard changes in diet can help but I never know what to eat, and I’ve also heard of St. Johns Wort but haven’t tried it yet. Are there any other natural treatments?
Take a multivitamin, look for something that is high in B-complex, this vitamins(b-complex) if taken in a balance dose helps to relax you and relieves stress.
Also try 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) they really works.
Also try to get some activities outdoor. Get some natural sunlight at least 30 minutes everyday. Studies show that there is a chemical reaction in the brain that happens. The more light a person can get the happier they are.
Exercise also relieves stress and releases tension. It can improve blood circulation, thus releases toxins which may trigger depressions.
Try jogging and brisk walking, it is a good start for healthy living.
When you are down you can have a bite of chocolate. Studies shows that there is a chemical thing in a cocoa that triggers the release of endorphins. This is a natural chemical in the body that makes a person happy. Expert recommend to take eat the chocolate with darker color (not the white) because they are rich in this chemical.
Take a warm bath every night before sleeping it helps to sooth you.
When sleeping you can light scented candles or ar aromatic oils also. It can relax you more. Try scents like rosemary.
But if you are into herbs you can try them as well.
Some have done wonders to other people.
But you have to consult an expert about herbs on how to use them and what should not be taken together with them.
It is available in all health store. Also in some health store ( like GNC or healthy options) there are some Pharmacists who are expert in Alternative Medicines, you can ask for their recommendations.

I successfully battled depression with L-Tryptophan, but in 1989 a group of people in Japan got sick from it and it was taken off the market. It worked really well. After it went off the market I went on Wellbutrin. I see it is back on the market. Please read all you can about it before you try it. Just because it is "natural" doesn’t mean it is harmless. Start reading here: http://www.drugs.com/mtm/l-tryptophan.html
Be careful with St. Johns Wart as it interacts with a lot of different medications. You really need to talk to your doctor even about natural products before you take them.

Medication can kill you, so stop taking those drugs. Find a buddy to hang out with. Play computer games. drink Chamomile tea. Go to the gym and workout. Keep yourself busy all the time.

I know it isn’t natural, but i battled depression with ecstasy. Took it once and after that I didn’t feel depressed anymore. Granted my depression wasn’t too bad and the come-down will make you feel worse than you do now so if you’re suicidal then i wouldn’t recommend it.

Mayo Clinic has been studying this, and a growing volume of research shows that exercise helps. It may take at least 30 minutes of exercise a day for at least three to five days a week to significantly improve depression symptoms. But smaller amounts of activity — as little as 10 to 15 minutes at a time — can improve mood in the short term.
Just how exercise reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety isn’t fully understood. Some evidence suggests that exercise raises the levels of certain mood-enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain. Exercise may also boost feel-good endorphins, release muscle tension, help you sleep better, and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. It also increases body temperature, which may have calming effects. All of these changes in your mind and body can improve such symptoms as sadness, fatigue, self-doubt and hopelessness.
The link below gives you tips to start exercising when you’re depressed, because it probably isn’t something you feel like doing right now:

Get into the sunlight everyday. Don’t wear sun glasses, just get out into the bright sun and let your eyes see it at least thirty minutes per day. There is a chemical reaction in your brain that occurs when you are in the light.
I would also suggest some form of EMF protection such as a shuzi or a q link. They greatly help with moods becasue they allow your body to create more melatonin. You will also sleep better with one of them. I prefer a shuzi, but many people use other EMF protective devices.
Finally take a good preparation of amino acids each evening before bed. Withou the correct proteins available, you body cannot create the hormones needed. Depression is caused by a lack of seratonin. Amino acids, especially tryptophine will help.

Here is a good website on St. John’s Wort Tea.
St. John’s Wort is now the best selling medicinal herb in the United States and many regions of the world. It is widely prescribed by German medical practitioners to treat and fight cases of major depression.
But please do perform diligent research first before taking this. As pointed above, it may have adverse reactions with your other medications.
