Is there a cure for severe anxiety disorder (throat closing/gagging)?

I am hoping to join the Marines this summer. The physical stress and demands do not concern me as Im in great shape. What concerns me is standing at attention and not being able to take anything for my severe anxiety disorder. It manifests itself in the feeling of my throat closing and me starting to gag. Could you imagine if this happened while at attention in the marines? Please, its my life goal to join the Marines and this anxiety disorder has hindered 20 of the 23 years of my life. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I cannot take medications or even herbal remedies (I dont believe) while in boot camp so that leaves maybe only hynosis? Does anyone else have this problem and has cured it? Thanks so much

There’s no cure. Just medicine and learning how to handle it when it occurs. I’ve had panic disorder for 12 years now. Once you understand what exactly is happening, you can learn how to live with it. You will have to see a doctor first. Sorry, but that’s the just of it.

hypnosis wont help.i know what you are going through, it is a horrible feeling, i have battled against it. i am still here, and as bad as it is, i wont allow it to beat me. i usualy find haveing a drink of cold water helps, you have to swallow! actualy you are prob holding youre breath, try relaxation and control breathing. bless xx

I would suggest prayer and try giving yourself tough love like tell yourself I put myself into this mess and I can’t get myself out of this. Think about the fact that you are serving for this country (also the fact that the war is about to be over in January 09 people aint gon want McCain as president).

The throat closing sensation you feel is actually clenching, not closing. So it might help to know that you won’t stop breathing or anything. People who pass out in these situations do so not because their breathing is impaired, but because of all the hormones that the "flight" response of anxiety triggers in the brain and the shutdown response that follows. A couple of things to try, and hypnosis is worth a try, too:

    1. Breathe slowly and deliberately through your nostrils, deep into your abdomen, and then let the breath out slowly through your lips. Closing your eyes might help. Repeat 10 times. This one’s easy to do while you’re standing at attention…only if someone was totally staring at you would they even notice what you’re doing.
    2. If you’re in private, take a small paper bag (lunchbag size), put it up tightly to your mouth and breathe slowly into the bag and out again. This is a tried and true method of treating panic attacks.
    3. Check into the herbal remedies thing…you may be able to keep some kava capsules on hand (from the health food store), and they have a similar effect as having a beer. Just takes the edge off and helps stop your mind from obsessing.
